He then won the AFC U-19 Championship, enabling Japan to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup where he grabbed a hat-trick and they beat Brazil 3-2 AET in the final before he moved on to FC Barcelona, winning an El Clasico 6-5 with a hat-trick and 3 assists. He was an inspiration to Hidetoshi Nakata, Zinedine Zidane, Allesandro del Piero and Fernando Torres among others.
